1
Arriving on F-1 — Your First Steps in the US
Day 1–30
⚠️ Enter the US no more than 30 days before your program start date on your I-20. Entering too early violates F-1 status.
📋 Documents to Have Ready
Valid passport (6+ months beyond stay)
F-1 visa stamp in passport
Original I-20 signed by your DSO
SEVIS fee receipt (I-901)
Acceptance letter from your university
Proof of financial support
🏫 First Week on Campus
Attend international student orientation — mandatory
Register with your DSO / International Students Office (ISO)
Confirm your SEVIS record is active
Enroll in full-time courses (12+ credits undergrad, 9+ grad)
Get student ID, university email, and health insurance
💳 Practical Setup
Open a US bank account (bring I-20, passport, I-94)
Get a US phone number and state ID / driver's license
Apply for SSN only after getting work authorization
File taxes every year (Form 8843 + 1040-NR if applicable)
📅 Maintain Your F-1 Status
Stay enrolled full-time every semester
Keep your I-20 current — renew before it expires
Report address changes to DSO within 10 days
On-campus work: max 20 hrs/week during school
Never work off-campus without CPT or OPT authorization
💡 Travel outside the US requires a valid visa stamp + updated I-20 travel signature. If your F-1 stamp expires while abroad, get a new stamp at a US consulate before re-entering.
2
CPT — Work While You Study
During Degree
⚠️ 12+ months of full-time CPT = zero OPT eligibility. Use CPT strategically. Part-time CPT (≤20 hrs/wk) does NOT affect OPT at all.
✅ CPT Eligibility
Must be enrolled for at least 1 academic year
Job must be an integral part of your curriculum
Must be tied to a specific course (for credit or required)
Authorized semester-by-semester by your DSO
Your I-20 is your work authorization — no EAD needed
📋 How to Get CPT Authorized
Get an internship offer letter
Register for the co-op/internship course with your advisor
Submit CPT request to DSO with offer letter and course info
DSO issues updated I-20 with CPT authorization
Do NOT start work before the I-20 CPT start date
💼 CPT Strategy
Keep total full-time CPT under 12 months
Part-time CPT every semester is fine
Great for internships at startups that don't sponsor H-1B
New I-20 needed for each new employer / semester
💡 CPT is FREE — no USCIS filing, no fees. Just paperwork with your DSO. Turn-around is usually 1–5 business days. Always get it before your start date!
3
OPT — Work After Graduation (12 Months)
Post-Graduation
⚠️ Apply up to 90 days before your program end date. Processing takes 3–5 months. Do NOT wait until graduation — start the process the semester before!
📋 OPT Application Steps
Request OPT DSO recommendation in your school's portal
DSO issues updated I-20 with OPT recommendation
File Form I-765 online at myaccount.uscis.gov
Pay the $520 USCIS filing fee
Wait for EAD card — do NOT start work before it arrives
💼 Employment Rules
Job must be directly related to your degree field
Can work for multiple employers (same field)
Minimum 20 hrs/week to count as "employed"
Can be W-2 employee or 1099 contractor
Remote work is allowed
📊 Reporting Requirements
Report new employer to DSO within 10 days
Report unemployment periods to your DSO
Report address changes within 10 days
Unemployment cap: 90 days total — exceeding this terminates OPT
⏰ Key Timing
Apply 90 days before program end date
OPT start date: up to 60 days after graduation
Days waiting for EAD count against the 90-day unemployment cap
Apply for STEM OPT extension 90 days before OPT expires
💡 While waiting for your EAD: secure your job offer, sign the contract, and prepare onboarding docs. Some employers let you sign before EAD arrives — just don't physically start until it's in hand.
4
STEM OPT — 24-Month Extension
During OPT Year 1
⚠️ Apply 90 days before OPT expires. If timely filed, USCIS grants a 180-day automatic extension so you never have a gap in work authorization.
✅ STEM OPT Eligibility
Degree must be on DHS's STEM Designated Degree Program list
Employer MUST be enrolled in E-Verify (verify at e-verify.gov)
Currently on valid OPT EAD
No previous STEM OPT extension used for same degree
📋 Application Steps
Employer completes Form I-983 (Training Plan) with you
Submit I-983 to DSO for recommendation
DSO issues new I-20 with STEM OPT recommendation
File Form I-765 online — reference category (c)(3)(C)
Pay $520 filing fee
📊 Ongoing Compliance
Self-evaluate + employer evaluates every 6 months via I-983
Submit evaluations to your DSO (not USCIS)
Report employer change to DSO within 10 days; new I-983 required
Unemployment cap: 150 days total during STEM OPT period
🎯 STEM OPT Strategy
You get up to 3 H-1B lottery chances during OPT + STEM OPT
Target companies with high H-1B approval rates
Build strong performance record for H-1B petition support
File H-1B petition before STEM OPT expires — don't miss the deadline
ℹ️ Total work authorization: 1 yr OPT + 2 yr STEM OPT = 3 years, covering up to 3 H-1B lottery rounds (April each year).
5
H-1B — Specialty Occupation Work Visa
March Lottery → Oct 1
⚠️ H-1B requires an employer sponsor and winning the annual lottery. Cap: 65,000 + 20,000 US master's. Historical selection odds vary (roughly 25–40%). Target H-1B-sponsoring companies early!
📅 Annual H-1B Timeline
Jan–Feb: Confirm employer will sponsor and register you
Mar 1–18: Employer registers you in the H-1B lottery (myUSCIS)
Late Mar: USCIS announces lottery selections
Apr 1 – Jun 30: Employer files I-129 petition if selected
Oct 1: H-1B status begins (earliest possible start date)
💼 Eligibility
Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in a specialty field
Job must require that specific degree (specialty occupation)
Employer pays prevailing wage (verified via DOL LCA)
Initial period: 3 years, renewable 3 more = 6 years total
H-1B holders can change employers — file I-129 transfer
🛡️ Cap-Gap: OPT → H-1B Bridge
If H-1B petition filed before OPT/STEM OPT expires
Automatic cap-gap extension covers you through Sep 30
Get updated I-20 from DSO showing cap-gap dates
Keep working normally at the same employer during this period
🎯 Job Search Tips
Target companies with high H-1B approval rates (DOL Employer Hub)
Large tech, consulting, and financial firms sponsor most H-1Bs
Ask in interviews: "Does your company sponsor H-1B?"
Secure offers by Jan/Feb to ensure March registration deadline
Plan B if not selected: more STEM OPT time or cap-exempt jobs
💡 Cap-exempt jobs (universities, nonprofits, govt research) don't require the lottery — you can start H-1B any time. Great backup if the lottery doesn't work out.
6
Green Card — Permanent Residency (EB Path)
Years 2–30+ (varies by country)
⚠️ For Indian and Chinese nationals, EB-2/EB-3 backlogs can be 10–30+ years due to per-country limits. Start PERM as early as possible — even year 1 of H-1B. Your priority date is everything.
📋 Step 1: PERM Labor Certification
Employer files PERM with DOL — proves no qualified US workers
Employer conducts required recruitment (job ads, interviews)
DOL approval takes 6–18 months
Approval date becomes your priority date — earlier = better
Required for EB-2 and EB-3 (not EB-1)
📋 Step 2: I-140 Immigrant Petition
Filed by employer after PERM approval
Establishes preference category (EB-1 / EB-2 / EB-3)
Standard processing: 6–12 months; Premium: 15 business days
Once approved 180+ days, priority date is portable to new employer
EB-1A / EB-1B: no PERM required — self-petition or employer
📅 Step 3: Wait for Priority Date
Check the DOS Visa Bulletin every month
When your priority date is "current" — file I-485 or Consular Processing
EB-1: often current for all countries (1–3 year wait)
EB-2/EB-3 India: typically 10–30+ year backlog
Under AC21: can change to same/similar job without losing priority date
✅ Step 4: Adjustment of Status (I-485)
File I-485 when priority date is current
File I-131 (Advance Parole travel doc) concurrently
File I-765 (EAD) — allows work while I-485 is pending
Biometrics appointment at local USCIS office
Approval = green card (I-551) mailed to you
ℹ️ EB-1A (Extraordinary Ability) and EB-1B (Outstanding Researcher) are often current for all nationalities — no PERM required. If you have publications, patents, or recognition in your field, consult an immigration attorney about EB-1.
💡 Under AC21 (portability), once your I-140 has been approved for 180+ days, you can change employers for a same or similar role without losing your priority date.
7
US Citizenship — Naturalization
5 Years After Green Card
✅ Eligibility Requirements
Hold green card for 5 years (3 if married to US citizen)
Age 18+
Continuous US residence — no trips of 6+ months abroad
Physical presence: 30 months out of last 60
Good moral character during the 5-year period
📋 Application Process
File Form N-400 at myaccount.uscis.gov — $725 fee
Biometrics appointment (fingerprints, photo)
Civics interview + English test at your local USCIS office
Study 100 official civics questions (USCIS study materials are free)
Oath of Allegiance ceremony → Certificate of Naturalization
🎉 After Citizenship
Apply for US passport (Form DS-11 at post office) — travel to 185+ countries
Vote in all federal, state, and local elections
Sponsor immediate family members for green cards
No more H-1B renewals, OPT deadlines, or visa worries
Surrender green card (I-551) after passport is issued
💡 The full journey from F-1 arrival to US citizenship is typically 10–35 years — depending on your birth country, visa category, and H-1B lottery luck. Start each phase as early as possible to protect your timeline.
